The International Empire Mock Trial Competition was held in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday, September 22 through Monday, September 25. Twenty-eight teams representing schools from around the country congregated in the Clayton County State Court, for the case - The Estate of Meric Calief vs. POWA (Prisons of Western America). This year’s case was about whether or not the prison treatment of Mr. Calief, a former inmate, caused him to subsequently commit suicide once released. Empire Atlanta is one of three international competitions held each year. The other two are in San Francisco and New York City.

In an earlier round, they took one of the two scoring ballots from the tournament’s eventual winner, Trinity, a team from California. It was especially gratifying to tie in ballots, as Trinity won Empire San Francisco in 2016. At the closing ceremony, James Orr, a senior from Indian Hill High School, was selected as 4th best attorney; Albert Kwon, a junior, as 9th best attorney; and Sumner Colohan, a junior, won 1st place as the best guest witness of all 28 teams. All members contributed to the team’s overall high scores and 3rd place finish.

Members from the Indian Hill Mock Trial Team are Ingrid Ackermann, Sumner Colohan, Richard Guan, Albert Kwon, Lyonna Lallement, Cameron Metz, James Orr, Cooper Pierce, Drew Plummer, Emily Sheard, Antonio Vega-Torres. Currahee!!
