Indian Hill High School senior earns Congressional Award Gold Medal

The Indian Hill School District celebrates Indian Hill High School senior Sophie Qiao who earned the Congressional Award Gold Medal, one of the nation's highest honors recognizing youth achievement, leadership and service.

“Sophie has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to serving others while challenging herself to grow as a student, leader, and citizen,” said Indian Hill High School Principal Andy Gruber. “Earning the Congressional Award Gold Medal requires exceptional dedication and perseverance. We are incredibly proud of Sophie's accomplishment and the example she sets for her peers.”

Established by Congress in 1979, the Congressional Award challenges young people to set and achieve ambitious goals in four areas: voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness, and expedition/exploration. To earn the Gold Medal, participants must complete at least 400 hours of voluntary public service, 200 hours each of personal development and physical fitness, and a five-day, four-night exploration in a new environment or culture. The award requires a minimum commitment of 24 months.

As part of her award, Qiao volunteered extensively at the Cincinnati Museum Center, where she led hands-on STEM activities for children and families. She also dedicated significant time to competitive volleyball, pursued advanced STEM and college preparation opportunities, and expanded her interests in engineering and artificial intelligence.

For her Expedition/Exploration, Qiao traveled to Belize, where she experienced a new culture, explored diverse ecosystems and gained a deeper appreciation for environmental conservation and global perspectives.

“These experiences helped me grow as a leader, lifelong learner and engaged member of my community while reinforcing my commitment to service, personal growth and making a positive impact,” Qiao said.

The Congressional Award is Congress' only charity and recognizes young people who challenge themselves through sustained achievement, initiative and service to others.
